Great Barrier Reef Foundation: Resilient Reefs - Ningaloo. Exmouth District High School, work experience program.
Recognizing that education is pivotal for successful and sustained conservation, Oceanwise Australia developed and facilitated a work experience initiative for Year 10 students at Exmouth District High School, in collaboration with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation, and Attractions (DBCA), Traditional Owners (TO’s), Ningaloo Glass Bottom Boat, and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF). The focus of the program was to provide students with a unique opportunity to actively engage in the design of a mooring area in Tantabiddi Sanctuary. Spanning eight weeks, the project empowered students to conduct reef surveys, evaluate coral health, delve into marine science, become familiar with boat operations, formulate proposals, facilitate peer-to-peer learning, and present their findings. The program also included informative sessions from park managers, including traditional owners. This project emphasizes the importance of encouraging experiential learning and connecting students to local ecosystems through nature-based field trips, swimming, and snorkeling lessons. The ultimate goal is to establish a personal connection between individuals and their marine environment, instill an understanding of its significance, and nurture a passion for conservation.
